Artpace has a lot of ground to cover, and we invite you to join us.
On October 8, 2016, bring your family and friends to Artpace Chalk It Up, a free festival of contemporary art, transforming Downtown Houston Street into a gallery – from the ground up.
Artpace Chalk It Up raises awareness and support for Artpace’s educational programs. Become an artist for a day in the Freestyle area and work on a collaborative, city block-sized mural. Kids can take part in hands-on educational activities in the Make Zones, where imaginations soar.
San Antonio’s best local artists will be there to create chalk murals along historic Houston Street, which will be closed from 10-4 for the event, and food trucks, live music, a photo booth, performances, and more make Artpace Chalk It Up the most exciting art party of the year.

Aspiring artists of all ages are invited to participate in the creation of a super-sized street mural, led by the San Antonio Museum of Art. This collaboration with friends and neighbors is just waiting for your creative input!
Our Make Zone Creation Stations feature imaginative hands-on art activities led by Artpace’s Associate Educators. Embrace your creativity and ingenuity with family activities that will teach you a little something about Artpace’s current artists and exhibitions, while providing big fun.
Feature and Showcase Artists
Our Showcase and Feature artists are always selected locally—they’re some of the city’s best, and play a prominent role in the success and enjoyment of Chalk It Up, creating compelling, original murals on Houston Street sidewalks. You don’t want to miss these professionals at play!
Some of San Antonio’s finest mobile restauranteurs will park their food trucks along Houston Street to offer fresh local food to hungry chalk artists of all ages.
The Artpace Chalk It Up stage across from the Majestic Theater features live music from a range of local musical artists. Check out the Artpace blog for updates and music samples from this year’s acts!
Let your creative genius run wild in our Freestyle Zones. We’ll provide buckets of chalk and plenty of blank canvas in the form of Houston Street; you bring the artwork. This is the one time you’re allowed to play in the street!
Team Works artists play a significant role in the event by creating original designs in chalk, rendered directly on a sidewalk “canvas” along Houston Street. Team Works artists can be educators, students, and members of cultural and community organizations.
