What is the Artpace Curatorial residency Program?
Building on the established International Artist-in-Residence program, the Curatorial Residency connects South Texas artists with curators from around the world. Artpace invites two curators each year for a six-week residency to live and work at Artpace, conduct studio visits with regional artists, and write critical reviews to be published in digital and traditional media outlets.
Selected curatorial residents tell the story of South Texas as they build professional relationships with regional artists that often don’t have access to art critics, leading curators, and promotional opportunities. The curatorial resident also utilizes their time to build their writing portfolio with new articles and blog posts, providing new critical perspective and bringing national and international attention to regional artists. This work is shared through traditional and non-traditional media. Additionally, curatorial residents have the opportunity to propose a future exhibition at Artpace.
This pilot program began in Summer 2017. Currently, Curatorial Residents are selected through a nomination panel of national curators, most of whom are former Artpace Guest Curators. Beginning with 2019 residencies, we also welcome curators who are interested in being considered for the residency to send us their background, experience, and credentials for review by Artpace staff. If selected, you’ll be asked to submit a proposal including a narrative about how you would utilize the residency.

About Juan Canela
Independent curator and writer. Co-founder of BAR project, he is member of the Programs Committee at HANGAR, Barcelona. He is part of the Present Future Curatorial Committee at Artissima Turin (2018), and part of the Guest Board at Live Works Performance Art Award at Centrale Fies Milan (2018). He has been curator of Opening section at ARCO Madrid (2016-17). Upcoming projects are Rometti Costales: Little animals, ash trays at CA2M Madrid (2018) and Canción de la voz florecida at Centro Cultural España in Santo Domingo, Doninican Republic (2019) ; He prepares with Angel Calvo the publication Curadora/Comisaria for Paper collection in Consonni Bilbao, and he usually writes for art magazines such as A*Desk, Babelia El País, Art-Agenda, Terremoto Magazine or Mousse.
