Artpace San Antonio seeks motivated undergraduate students for semester-long internships for academic credit in the following departments: Archive, Education/Curatorial, PR/Development, and Studio/Exhibition Practices. The internships are offered each semester, including summer, and are unpaid. They are competitive, and offer invaluable practical experience, as well as the chance to become part of a world- renowned contemporary art organization located in the heart of San Antonio.
Artpace serves as an advocate for contemporary art and as a catalyst for the creation of significant art projects. We seek to nurture emerging and established artists and to provide opportunities for inspiration, experimentation, and education. Through our International Artist-in-Residence program (IAIR), we invite nine artists annually to participate in a two-month residency. Each residency is comprised of three artists—one from Texas, one from elsewhere in the United States, and one from abroad. Artpace also organizes four group or single-artist exhibitions of contemporary work each year in our fourth gallery, the Hudson (Show)Room (HSR). The impact of our resident artists and exhibitions is extended and strengthened by our broad range of panels, lectures, artist talks, and school and community programs. Through these activities we are constantly cultivating diverse audiences for contemporary art and providing a forum for ongoing dialogue in San Antonio.
The undergraduate internships vary each semester according to upcoming exhibitions and artists. Successful candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and be able to devote significant energy to the tasks at hand while bringing to the table new ideas and creative solutions. There are no prerequisites—we just ask that you are focused and committed while here. You will get out of the internship as much as you put into it.
Archive: An intern in this department will assist in the gathering and organizing of material on resident artists, including visual material and press clippings. The intern may organize and facilitate documentation of exhibitions, public programs, and events. She/he may assist visitors to the archives (Artpace's library of current publications and information on contemporary artists) and respond to outside requests for information.
Education/Curatorial: An intern in this department should have strong written and verbal abilities, and an interest in developing those skills as they relate to contemporary art. The intern will assist in the creation of public programs (for people of all ages) associated with exhibitions. This may include developing new ideas or facilitating projects already in the works. The intern will assist with written material produced about current and future exhibitions, including gallery notes and press releases. This may include research, summarizing information, and daily tasks associated with exhibition planning.
PR/Development: An intern in this department will assist External Affairs with press and donor relations as well as database management. People skills and attention to detail are a must. The intern will have the opportunity to be significantly involved in a new, ongoing series of events geared toward familiarizing the community with our organization, as well as in the planning of large fundraising events to take place in the late spring and fall.
Studio/Exhibition Practices: An intern in this department will work to help resident artists in the production of new projects. They may assist the technical and studio staff in planning and installing IAIR projects, HSR exhibitions, and other artworks. Interns may also assist the studio staff with preparing the building for exhibitions, programs, events, and openings.
