SAN ANTONIO, TX – Trisha Donnelly’s (San Francisco, CA) drawings, videos, audio works, and performative demonstrations require both acute observation and a leap of faith. This exhibition will be the enigmatic artist’s first solo institutional show, and will be composed of more than a dozen works from 2002 through the present. Each work will build upon the next to stretch notions of absolute truth and reflect upon the role of sound and history in her innovative practice.

Past pieces have included a barely-there drawing which a gallery attendant reveals as the antiquated gesture of buttoning a garter, a video of the artist intently repeating hand movements intended to produce precipitation in Canada, and an appearance by Donnelly herself dressed as Napoleon riding horseback into the gallery to deliver a message of surrender.

While diverse in their media, Donnelly’s works consistently push credulity, dipping into romanticism and myths about the power and possibilities of art and the artist. Her exhibition will be on view in the Hudson (Show)Room April 28 – July 17, 2005.

Donnelly received her MFA from Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT in 2000 and her BFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, CA in 1995. Solo exhibitions include Casey Kaplan, New York, NY (2004), The Wrong Gallery, New York, NY (2004); and Air de Paris, Paris, France (2002). Group exhibitions include “1 Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art,” former Lenin Museum, Moscow, Russia; “54th Carnegie International,” Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA; 50th International Exhibition of Art, Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy; “Collection (or How I Spent a Year), PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY; “Baja to Vancouver: The West Coast in Contemporary Art,” a traveling exhibition: Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA, among others; “Young Scene,” Vienna Seccession, Vienna, Austria; “Moving Pictures,” Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY which traveled to Bilbao, Spain; and the “Altoids Curiously Strong Collection,” New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY.
