SAN ANTONIO, TX – John Pilson's video and photographic work contrast the refined sobriety of the urban landscape and architectural detail with the levity of human expression and play. Pilson’s settings, often shown in fragmented details (signs, hallways, closed doors), are populated by regular-seeming characters who engage in individualized, even quixotic, acts of expression. In Above the Grid a pair of suited businessmen break into earnest doo-wop within the tiled walls of the company restroom. Similarly in St Denis, a cast of characters occupies the eclectic building’s in-between spaces: elevators, restrooms, stairwells, and basement corridors. Engaged in various acts of consciousness, these workers and dreamers confess, convene, and perform.

Pilson’s work will be on view at Artpace in the Hudson (Show)Room July 28 – October 16, 2005. An opening reception will be held Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 PM, with an artist talk at 7:00 PM. John Pilson will return to Artpace in September—during San Antonio’s month-long celebration of photography, Fotoseptiembre—to discuss the impact of digital technology on the art of photography in a lecture entitled, Disappearer: Optical Anxieties Before and After Photoshop.

The artist received his MFA from Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT in 1993 and his BFA from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY in 1991.
