ARTPACE ANNOUNCES NOTHING IS NEUTRAL: ANDREA BOWERS IN THE HUDSON (SHOW)ROOM
October 26, 2006 - January 28, 2007

San Antonio, TX - The work of Los Angeles-based artist Andrea Bowers explores recent histories of art and politics, amplifying questions of democracy and social engagement. For some fifteen years Bowers has explored individual expression within society at large, including sports and rock fans as well as political activists. Her work offers a uniquely feminist critique, eliding dogma for dissent and exploding simple notions of radicality.

Nothing is Neutral will feature Eulogies to One and Another (2006), a series of paper "monuments" to Marla Ruzicka and Faiz Ali Salim, two civilians who were killed while traveling through Afghanistan and Iraq researching civilian deaths and founding the organization Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict (CIVIC) to secure compensation from the U.S. government for families affected by the ongoing conflict. In this series, Bowers documents their efforts through news media obituaries found on the internet as a way to examine the privilege of the powerful and the value placed on individual lives.

The exhibition will also include Bowers' installation Letters to the Army of Three Displayed (2005). Decorative wallpaper and photocopies of letters written to the Army of Three-three activist women who crusaded for legal abortions and women's health rights from 1964 to 1973, ostensibly founding the pro-choice movement in the United States-accompany a video in which actors read these missives aloud. By focusing on the pleas of everyday people, Bowers' work questions the notion of activism itself and offers an elegant meditation on democracy.

Bowers received her masters in fine arts for the California Institute of the Arts in 1992. Recent solo exhibitions include: Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Los Angeles, CA; Halle fuer Kunst eV, Lüneberg, Germany; Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; and Magazin 4 Voralberger Kunstverein, Bregenz, Austria. Recent group shows include: Monuments for the USA, CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco CA (2005-06); Old News, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA (2005); Fast Forward: Media Art From the Goetz Collection, Madrid, Spain (2004); and Dance Dance Revolution, The Leroy Neiman Gallery, Columbia University, New York, NY (2004-2005).
