SAN ANTONIO, TX – ArtTalks, Artpace’s free public lecture series, hosts Okwui Enwezor on Thursday, September 20, 2007. Enwezor will present a talk titled Intelligence Failure: The Relationship Between Photography and the Archive, and will expand on topics from his forthcoming book Archaeology of the Present: The Postcolonial Archive, Photography and African Modernity.

Part of Artpace’s year-round educational programming, ArtTalks features notable local and visiting speakers through free, public lectures, panels, and symposia. The events bring together artists, critics, curators, and other aft professionals to discuss ideas related to Artpace exhibitions, and current issues in contemporary art and society.

Who
Okwui Enwezor, a pioneer in the field of art history and criticism, is an independent curator, writer, and educator. A native of Kalaba, Nigeria, Enwezor immigrated to America in1983 to pursue a career as a poet. He soon shifted his focus to critical writing, addressing themes found in contemporary African art, a topic that had been largely neglected. Since then, Enwezor has had a dominant presence in both curatorial and academic spheres. Enwezor was the Artistic Director of Documenta 11, Kassel, Germany (1998-2002) and the 2nd Johannesburg Biennale, South Africa (1997). He has curated such acclaimed exhibitions as The Short Century and Mirror’s Edge.

Today, Enwezor serves as the Dean of Academic Affairs and Senior Vice-President of San Francisco Art Institute, California, and as Adjunct Curator at the International Center of Photography, New York, New York. He has also serves as Artistic Director to the Second Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de Sevilla, Spain.
