From the Archive: SET
On May 5, 2016, Artpace presented SET – a collaborative traveling exhibition program by visual artists and musicians that re-defined the moving image through the context of divergent sites and live soundtracks.
Experimental in nature, the project considers the ways in which artists work in anticipation of an unknown auditory response and, in turn, how musicians and performers reply to a divergent range of imagery. In essence, the video becomes the written word, and the sound, the pronunciation. Like a homograph, the performed interpretation defines the meaning of the word. At the center of this project are chance procedures, unforeseeable juxtapositions, and an evolving set of meanings propelled by the mechanics of translation.
This single night event featured original compositions and performances by musicians Joe Reyes and Paul Fauerso, and include video works by Cheryl Donegan, Celeste Fichter, Duncan Ganley, Tatiana Istomina, Susan Jacobs, Maura Jasper, Liz Rodda, Luz Maria Sánchez, Barron Sherer, Joey Fauerso, and Michael Velliquette. SET was organized by Liz Rodda and Joey Fauerso, with support from Artpace and the School of Art and Design at Texas State University.
